Conlan Oils – Oil Analysis
Oil analysis is a routine activity for analyzing oil health, oil contamination and machine wear. The purpose of an oil analysis program is to verify that a lubricated machine, gear or part is operating according to expectations. When an abnormal condition or parameter is identified through oil analysis, immediate actions can be taken to correct the root cause or to mitigate a developing failure.
Lubricating oil analysis is carried out for a number of different reasons including:
1.Contaminant Detection: Oil analysis identifies contaminants like dirt, water, fuel, or metal particles that enter the lubricating system due to wear or external factors. The presence of these contaminants can signal issues like engine wear, coolant leaks, or inadequate filtration.
2.Viscosity Testing: Measuring the oil’s viscosity (its resistance to flow) is essential for ensuring it maintains the proper lubrication for machinery. Changes in viscosity may indicate oxidation, contamination, or thermal breakdown of the oil.
3.Wear Metals Analysis: Through spectroscopic analysis, the presence of wear metals such as iron, copper, aluminum, or lead can be detected. The levels and types of metals help determine which engine or machine components are wearing down.
4.Oxidation and Nitration: These tests measure the degradation of the oil due to exposure to heat and pressure. Oxidation leads to the thickening of oil, while nitration can cause acid buildup, both of which can negatively affect engine performance.
5.Water Content: Excessive water in the oil can reduce its lubricating properties, causing rust, corrosion, and increased wear. This test ensures the oil remains free from water contamination.
